After the success working with Robert DeLong for his concert visuals, his management team suggested that I do the design for his new album "In The Cards". I worked with Robert to develop a visual concept and bring it to life for his album packaging design. I lead all steps of the process from Creative Direction and Art Direction through Photography and final Graphic Design.
The goal was to create an immersive environment through a juxtaposition of digital technology and natural landscape as a metaphor for his use of electronic dance music to ask deep questions about the human condition.
With tarot cards as a consistent theme I developed an iconographic system based on the Major and Minor Arcana of the traditional tarot deck. This was used initially for the concert visuals and was then extended to the album artwork.
To execute this concept we did an all night photoshoot in the desert near Death Valley, California. I programmed a custom software application in Processing that allowed us to manipulate the parameters of the projected geometry in realtime. We also experimented with projecting typography and the tarot iconography.
Robert's one-man-band performance style is a big part of his overall presentation so we experimented with various photography techniques to highlight this including the long exposure and strobe photography seen in the cover images for the album's digital singles and the poster included with the vinyl release.
