Client: New York Hall of Science
Role: Art Director, UI Designer
Phases: Concept, Design, Production
NYSCI (or the New York Hall of Science) is an educational institution in Queens, NY dedicated to teaching students by indulging their curiosity and nurturing their creativity. Part of the way they do this is by studying how technology, gaming, and play affect how we learn. In collaboration with their team of researchers and teachers Local Projects developed five iPad apps called “Noticing Tools” as a way to further this study and empower students to take learning into their own hands.
As Senior Designer on two of the apps I had a variety of roles.
For ChoreoGraph I was involved from visual design through production. I lead the user interface design and collaborated with interaction designer John Ryan on the user experience. I also participated in user testing sessions with students in their classroom to help refine the learning experience and worked with iOS developer Jonathan Saggau at Enharmonic on final production of the app. Additional design by Karen Vanderbilt and art direction by Erika Tarte.
For Volumize I collaborated with John on the concept and interaction design. The final design was done by Karen with art direction by Erika.
As an added bonus the Noticing Tool apps made an appearance behind Apple CEO Tim Cook in his Sept 2015 keynote address as he mentioned innovation in education.
